Dear Friends and Clients, the Lunar New Year holidays have drawn to a close and to mark the astronomical shift I’m sending out a little firecracker to celebrate the new cycle.
This is the year of the fire horse and in Chinese philosophy this means an intense combination of fire sitting on top of fire, waking up from winter and a return of life, energy and transformation. A year of moving forward without hesitation. Tearing down old structures to create something new. It’s a very powerful and wild energy. Shifty is the key word, seismic movement, the world we are now living in.
The feeling is layering things up, collaging and gilding down idea upon idea, being open to the emotion of what looks right, shifting it around, and settling on a new statement.
I went to the V&A yesterday to see the Marie Antoinette exhibition, it is stunning, a story retold and repurposed in fashion over decades, both excessive and spectacular. I then went to my boxes of antique fabrics that I’ve collected over the years, some going as far back as the 18th centuries, and got stuck right into it.
The famous lyric: “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in,” signifies finding beauty in imperfections, and I think this is how I’m looking at things, especially with the historic references and my precious shards of textiles that have survived till now in ragged elegance. There’s not enough left of these fragments and saved pieces, to have just one thing. They need to be combined. We are working on this story and many others in preparation for ComoCrea, our next major event in Cernobbio , Villa Erba, March 23rd 24th , I couldn’t think of more perfect a setting.
Best and closest airport to the show is Milan Malpensa, there’s a boat from Como Centre to Cernobbio, Vila Erba, it doesn’t take long. Como and Cernobbio 5k apart, depending on the traffic, a 15-minute drive. Cernobbio is a thriving little town with plenty of restaurants if you want to stay local. Como has the shops!
